Everyone loves to wave the flag of their favorite football team or country. Be a sensible patriot though and show your love for your country or team by displaying a decal rather than hoisting a large flag from your vehicle.
Attaching a flag to your antenna or clamping one in the window increases wind resistance and reduces the aerodynamic design of the vehicle. This can have a large impact over time on your miles per gallon.
Also on the subject of wind resistance, keep your windows closed whenever possible. Your mileage should improve if you keep the windows closed at highway speeds, since air drag is reduced. This is true even with the air-conditioning on, assuming the system is in good working order. If possible try to avoid using air-conditioning in heavy stop and go traffic such as traffic jams or holiday weekend backups.
Remove any external accessories such as a luggage rack, surfboard or rooftop carrier. These are other items that reduce your vehicle’s aerodynamic capabilities and increase your fuel usage. Finally, if you have a pickup, leave the tailgate down as this can also help reduce aerodynamic drag.
